A G.I. Artist’s Sketchpad, 1943–1944

"Two days of rough weather - November 24-27 - Everyone seasick."
That was crossing the Mediterranean. That's when I got my taste for tea. It was an English ship and they insisted on using dishes. The ship was rolling around and everybody was lying on the floor. They had these long tables the whole width of the cabin and the steward would bring in the crockery, put it down and everybody would lie there and watch the dishes move. They'd go this way and then they'd move that way - and then they flew off the end of the table and smashed on the floor. The steward came back in and softly exclaimed: "Blimey!"
